Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I'm an English Facilitator, here a some of my thoughts about learning the English language.

 

Happy All Saints’ Eve?

 

So, Halloween/Hallowe’en/Hallows’ Even/All Hallows’ Eve/All Saints’ Eve is here.

 

Hallow - an old word for Saint.

 

Even - an old Scottish word for eve (as in the day before).

 

Essentially “Halloween” is contracted from, “All Hallows’ Even” which is, All Saints’ Eve. You may know Christmas Eve as the day before Christmas Day, so, the day after All Saints’ Eve is All Saints’ Day.

 

On the Christian calendar, All Saints’ Day is November the first. I remember being told as a child that it was a very Holy day. So, the day before 1 November, all evil creatures would be very busy causing problems as the next day all the Saints would scare them into hiding.

 

We would sing songs and carve turnips (not pumpkins) into scary faces, with a candle inside to frighten off witches, evil spirits and the like. Although this relates to a Christian festival this practice pre-dates Christianity.

Celts would celebrate the end of the harvest on this day and also thought that the wall between our world and the spirit world became thin enough for ghosts to pass through. Ceremonies and Rites would be performed to protect themselves and their crops. It’s funny that we still do some of these things today as originated in Western Europe, although, stuffing my face with chocolate is a modern tradition that I don’t mind following too.

 

As a child, my sisters and I went around with carved turnips in hand, going door-to-door, singing this song and were given money for our efforts in scaring away evil spirits.
